Abstract

Refractive disorders are one of the common causes of visual impairment in the community and are often not detected early. One type of refractive disorder that requires special examination techniques is astigmatism, which can cause blurred or shadowy vision at all distances. This community service activity aims to conduct early detection and examination of astigmatism disorders using the cross cylinder method in the RT 001/RW 022 Pondok Ungu Permai area, Bekasi, West Java Province. The cross cylinder method was chosen because it has high accuracy in determining subjective cylinders in patients with astigmatism. The examination was carried out on 103 clients of various ages. The results of the activity showed that of the 103 clients examined, the refractive disorders found with the largest proportion were hypermetropia (22.33%), followed by astigmatism (20.81%), and myopia (10.19%). In addition, 93 clients (90.29%) were diagnosed with presbyopia, and 3 clients (2.91%) were suspected of having organic disorders in the form of cataracts. These findings indicate that although the main focus of the activity is on astigmatism, the proportion of other refractive disorders and organic disorders is also significant and needs attention. This activity provides real benefits for the community in recognizing their vision conditions and encouraging further follow-up examinations to eye health facilities. It is hoped that similar activities can continue to be carried out sustainably in order to improve the level of community eye health.
