PEMERIKSAAN REFRAKSI DAN EDUKASI KESEHATAN MATA DI PONDOK PESANTREN PESISIR KARAWANG
Abstract
Coastal communities are a vulnerable group facing barriers to accessing eye health services due to geographical, economic, and low literacy constraints. This community service program aimed to perform early detection of refractive errors and provide eye health education to the coastal community at Ibnu Batutah Islamic Boarding School, Pakisjaya, Karawang. The methods included visual acuity screening, objective and subjective refraction examinations by optometrists, and eye health counseling. The activity was conducted on September 4, 2024, with 289 participants. The results showed that 19% of participants had refractive errors (ametropia) and 76% had presbyopia. A total of 8% of participants were suspected of having organic abnormalities such as cataracts and pterygium. All participants diagnosed with refractive errors and presbyopia (100%) received free corrective spectacles. The main risk factors identified included excessive UV exposure, low literacy levels, and limited economic access and healthcare services. In conclusion, this program successfully improved access to eye health services, detected visual impairments early, and provided spectacle intervention to the coastal community in Karawang.
